Get Your Home Ready for the Holidays

December is here, and the holidays are just around the corner! Whether you’re hosting family and friends or enjoying quiet evenings at home, this is the perfect time to get your home cozy and festive. And if you’re thinking this might be your last holiday season in this home, check out my Buyers page to start planning your next move. Use this simple checklist to make your home feel warm and ready for the season.

1. Clean and Organize

Before putting up holiday decorations, spend some time tidying up. Donate things you don’t need and organize your space. Once that’s done, give your home a good cleaning—vacuum the floors, dust the shelves, and wipe down surfaces. A clean house makes it easier to decorate.

2. Add Cozy Touches

December is all about staying warm! Swap out lightweight blankets for thick, soft ones. Add pillows, rugs, or throws in cozy materials like fleece or velvet. You can also use candles, string lights, or a fireplace to make your home feel extra snug.

3. Decorate for the Holidays

You don’t need to go overboard with decorations. Pick a theme like red and green, gold and silver, or a natural look with greenery and wood.

  • Front Door: Hang a wreath to welcome your guests.
  • Living Room: Put up a tree, hang stockings, and add garlands to your mantel or shelves.
  • Dining Table: A simple centerpiece with candles, pinecones, or ornaments can make the space feel festive.

4. Check Your Home’s Winter Needs

Winter weather can be tough, so make sure your home is ready:

  • Look for cold drafts around windows or doors and seal them with weatherstripping.
  • Change the filter in your furnace so it heats your home better.
  • Clear out gutters and check your roof to prevent ice problems.

5. Make Your Kitchen Holiday-Ready

The kitchen is the busiest place during the holidays! Clean out your fridge and pantry to make room for all your holiday meals and snacks. Get your favorite dishes and serving bowls ready so they’re easy to grab when you need them.

6. Get Ready for Guests

If you’re having visitors stay over, make a cozy space for them. Fresh sheets, extra blankets, and a little holiday decoration will make your guests feel welcome. You can also leave out a few small treats, like chocolates or cookies, for a nice touch.

7. Prepare for Winter Weather

Snow and ice can make things tricky, so stay ahead of the weather:

  • Keep salt or sand near your driveway and sidewalks.
  • Make sure you have a good snow shovel.
  • Stock up on flashlights and extra blankets, just in case the power goes out.

8. Decorate Outside Too

Your outdoor spaces can spread holiday cheer! Add lights to your railings, hang decorations on your porch, or fill a planter with evergreen branches and ornaments.

9. Give Back to Others

The holidays are a great time to share what you can. Go through your closets and donate clothes or toys you don’t need. You could also join a food or toy drive in your community. Giving back feels great!

10. Enjoy the Season

Most importantly, take time to enjoy your home. Turn on the holiday lights, play your favorite songs, and relax with your family. The holidays are about making special memories! And if 2025 is the year you move to a new neighbourhood, explore KW move-up neighbourhoods for some inspiration.

With a little effort, your home will be ready for a wonderful holiday season. Happy holidays from my home to yours!
